Let’s start with weight loss medications. Both Hers and Noom offer access to prescription medications that can suppress your appetite, help you feel fuller, reduce your food intake, and promote weight loss.

Key differences:

  • With a prescription, Hers customers can access GLP-1s, weight loss pills, and anti-nausea medication. Noom only offers GLP-1s.

  • Noom offers Mounjaro® and Zepbound®. Hers does not.

  • Through the Hers platform, providers can prescribe a customizable dosing schedule for people taking compounded semaglutide.

Here’s how the offerings compare in more detail.

Weight Loss Injections

Hers

Qualifying Hers customers can access both GLP-1s (glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists) and oral weight loss medications through the online platform.

GLP-1 injections available through Hers include:

  • Ozempic. Ozempic is a once-weekly injection approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to help people with type 2 diabetes manage blood sugar (glucose). It’s sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss because it helps reduce your appetite, so you eat fewer calories.

  • Wegovy. Wegovy is also a once-weekly injection. It has the same active ingredient as Ozempic (semaglutide) and works in the same way, but it comes in a higher dose. It’s FDA-approved for weight loss for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or 27 or more with at least one weight-related condition like sleep apnea, high blood pressure (hypertension), or high cholesterol.

  • Compounded semaglutide. Compounded semaglutide contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic® and Wegovy®, but it hasn’t been approved or evaluated by the FDA. This once-weekly injection is more affordable than brand-name options.

Compounded semaglutide available through Hers is produced at FDA-registered 503B facilities in the U.S. with ingredients sourced from FDA-regulated manufacturers. Each batch is tested for safety and efficacy. Certificates of analysis (CoA) outlining the results of these tests are available through the Hers app.

Noom

Noom also offers injectable GLP-1 weight loss medications, including:

  • Ozempic

  • Wegovy

  • Compounded semaglutide

  • Mounjaro®

  • Zepbound®

Mounjaro is an FDA-approved once-a-week injection for treating type 2 diabetes. Like Ozempic, it’s often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It works by suppressing appetite and increasing feelings of fullness.

Zepbound has the same active ingredient (tirzepatide) as Mounjaro in the same dose. The only difference is that it’s FDA-approved for weight loss in those with a BMI of 30 or more or 27 or more with a weight-related health condition.

Noom works with a 503B FDA-registered pharmacy to provide its compounded semaglutide medication. Certificates of analysis are available upon request.

Weight Loss Pills

Hers

Oral medications available through the Hers platform include:

  • Metformin. Metformin is a daily pill. While it’s FDA-approved to treat type 2 diabetes, it’s often prescribed off-label for weight loss. It works by suppressing your appetite, which makes it easier to stick to healthy portion sizes and food choices.

  • Naltrexone. Naltrexone is one of the active ingredients in Contrave®, an FDA-approved medication for weight loss. Contrave works by reducing appetite and increasing the body's energy use.

  • Topiramate. Topiramate, aka Topamax®, is an antiseizure drug sometimes prescribed off-label for weight loss. It can decrease appetite, alter reward pathways to reduce binge eating, and lower cholesterol levels.

  • Bupropion. Bupropion is an antidepressant that can be prescribed off-label in combination with other medications to help support weight loss. Bupropion is also an active ingredient in Contrave.

Through Hers, qualifying customers can get personalized oral medication kits. These kits can contain a custom combination of the above medications. Kits may also include vitamin B12.

Oral medications are well-suited for people who don’t like needles and those who don’t qualify for GLP-1s.

Noom

Noom doesn’t provide access to oral weight loss medications at this time. However, healthcare providers on their platform may be able to provide a prescription for medications like metformin. You would need to get this prescription filled at a local or mail-order pharmacy.

Side Effect Management

Gastrointestinal side effects like nausea and constipation are not uncommon when starting a new weight loss medication. Here’s how Hers and Noom are helping support customers.

Hers

Hers offers access to ondansetron (generic Zofran®) for semaglutide nausea.

Hers customers prescribed GLP-1s or oral weight loss medications may be eligible for prescription anti-nausea medication at no additional cost. A healthcare provider will determine whether you’re eligible. This offer is unique to Hims.

If eligible, ondansetron (Zofran) can be taken as needed to treat nausea while your body adjusts to weight loss medications.

When you get compounded semaglutide through Hers, your provider can also prescribe a personalized and adjustable dosing schedule. Because GLP-1s affect everyone differently, this is a key feature of the program.

Many people experience GI upset when initially starting GLP-1 injections, which is why doctors start you on a lower dose and slowly increase it over time. On the other hand, some people don’t feel the effects of lower doses as acutely.

With customized dosing, your provider can start small and increase your dose slowly or start higher and increase your dose more rapidly. The goal is to find what works best for you.

Weight loss medication is just one part of a sustainable weight loss program. You’ll also want to build healthy habits that will help you maintain a healthy body weight in the long run.

Both Hers and Noom offer access to weight loss services beyond prescription medications. Hers is unique in that it offers access to meal replacement bars and shakes, while Noom stands out for its community support.

Weight Loss by Hers

Hers holistic weight loss program includes a mobile app with a range of behavioral-change tools to help you make lifestyle changes to support long-term weight management.

The app includes:

  • Realistic meal plans

  • Healthy recipes

  • Eating tips tailored to your eating habits (such as whether you eat on autopilot or are an anxious eater)

  • Educational content on sleep, movement, mental health, and nutrition

  • Tools to track your protein intake, steps, hydration, sleep, and overall progress

  • Ongoing access to providers for questions or concerns

Meal Replacement Bars and Shakes

Through Hers, you can also purchase doctor-recommended meal replacement bars and shakes. These convenient, protein-packed bars and shakes are designed to support people taking weight loss medications. They may help you:

  • Feel full longer by adding more fiber to your diet

  • Eat a consistent amount of calories each day

  • Get more essential nutrients

  • Maintain lean muscle mass by adding more protein to your diet

According to Dr. Craig Primack, senior vice president of weight loss at Hims and Hers, “In my 20+ years specializing in obesity medicine, I've seen firsthand how important it is that anyone seeking sustainable, long-term weight management not rely on medication alone.”

“That holistic approach,” he says, “has been a pillar of our Weight Loss offering from the start, but these bars and shakes take it to the next level.”

Noom Weight Loss Services and Support

The Noom app offers similar weight loss support to help you build healthy habits. Noom has long focused on guiding people through healthy behavioral changes. Their program draws on the tenets of psychology to help people make sustainable changes.

To support people on their weight management journey, Noom offerings include:

  • Educational resources to support behavioral change

  • Progress and other tracking tools

  • Meal plans and nutritional guidance

  • Fitness content

  • Community support

Both Hers and Noom provide access to weight loss medications online, so you can get support from home — no visits to the doctor’s office required.

Hers Weight Loss Sign-Up Process

Here’s how Hers works:

  1. You’ll complete an online intake form. You’ll start with an online weight loss assessment in which you’ll answer questions about your weight loss goals, health history, and lifestyle habits.

  2. A healthcare provider will review your info. Most consultations on the Hers platform take place asynchronously (consultation calls are required in a few states). The Hers platform allows for secure messaging between customers and providers.

  3. You’ll get a prescription and personalized plan. Your provider will determine which (if any) weight loss medications are suitable for you. If you’re a good candidate, you’ll get a prescription and a personalized weight loss plan with everything you need to kickstart your journey.

  4. Your medications are shipped to your door. Along with your medication, you’ll get supplies like syringes (if applicable) and instructions on how to take your meds. If your provider prescribes it, you may also receive an anti-nausea drug called ondansetron (Zofran®) to help manage the side effects of weight loss medications.

  5. You’ll have unlimited access to providers. You can reach out to providers on the Hers platform anytime with questions or concerns. During these online check-ins, you can discuss your progress and let your provider know if you’re struggling with side effects. They might prescribe an anti-nausea drug like ondansetron (if you haven’t received it already) or recommend tweaks to your dosing schedule.

Noom Weight Loss Sign-Up Process

Noom has a similar process. You’ll start with an online assessment in which you’ll provide information about your weight loss goals and medical history.

A healthcare provider will review your answers and write you a prescription for weight loss medication, if they determine you’re a good candidate.

Your medication will be shipped to your home, and you’ll get access to Noom’s weight loss tools and a healthcare provider while you’re receiving treatment.
