The purge

Some people experience “the purge” a couple weeks into treatment, where skin may feel irritated and more blemishes may appear at first. But don’t freak out—this is normal and a sign that the cream is working.

FAQs about acne and our acne cream

Whether you’re experiencing teen or adult acne, the causes are often similar: dead skin cells combined with excess sebum or oil production, which can end up clogging pores (or what dermatologists call comedones). This can happen because of a number of reasons, like normal hormonal changes or lifestyle changes, which can cause our body’s natural ability to regulate oil production to go out of whack.
It depends on the type of acne you’re experiencing. A dermatology professional can help you understand what your skin needs and recommend an effective course of treatment. (A skin consultation with a medical provider is free on our platform btw). Some types of stubborn acne may not clear up with commonly-used teenage acne products and a provider may recommend a prescription topical treatment (like tretinoin) or oral medication (eg, isotretinoin, oral antibiotics like doxycycline or tetracycline , an anti-inflammatory , etc).
Your acne might come in the form of whiteheads, blackheads, sebaceous cysts, nodules, or pustules. Some people experience mild or moderate breakouts while others can have severe cases of acne. While moderate acne is manageable and can be treated with over-the-counter solutions, severe acne is typically much more difficult to treat and can require a more targeted, medical approach.
In general, salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide are commonly used skincare products to treat acne. Adapalene used to be a prescription-only medication for years, but it is now available over the counter. If your acne hasn’t responded to using a cleanser, exfoliant, and spot treatment in the past, over-the-counter solutions may not work for you. When other treatments have failed, consider talking to a professional.
Retinols and retinoids, like Tretinoin, are vitamin A derivatives. They’re mainly used to treat dermatological skin conditions, including acne. Retinols and retinoids work to unclog pores, reduce inflammation, and speed cell turnover which can help with discoloration and evening out the surface of your skin.
If you’re breaking out, the first place you should look is your bathroom shelf. Make sure the products you use are oil-free. Look for non-comedogenic on the bottle, which means that the product won’t clog your pores, which is one of the most common causes of acne.
If you have acne-prone skin, it is important to establish a consistent, simple skin care routine to fight your acne. First, cleanse your skin with a gentle facial cleanser to clear away any sweat, dirt and bacteria. Next, apply an acne treatment, such as our acne cream with tretinoin. Finally, apply a hydrating moisturizer. While a moisturizing lotion may seem redundant if you already have oily skin, keeping your skin moisturized can prevent overproduction of the oils that clog pores.
